Moderation team update - June 2016

Post by Alena Rybik »

Dear fellow moderators!

Sadly, these moderation updates have been abandoned by me for quite some time. The main reason is, as usual, lack of time and bad prioritization. But I was asked by TundraPuppy to bring them back, which I think is an excellent idea, and I am committed to do them on a monthly basis. Let’s see how it goes - please remind me if I am late :D

Moderation
For one, I’ve added you all your em$ for May, sorry about being late with them. Thank you for all your help with the forum and hope you’ll enjoy spending!

About the current state of moderation on the forum - I would like to ask you all to be more active, not only when it comes to moderating of trouble-makers, but also the “housekeeping” part - renaming thread titles to clarify what they are about, moving them to more suitable forums, merging similar ones, splitting posts that went off-topic into separate discussions etc. etc. Also, I’ve noticed that we are getting a lot of new members recently and it’s especially important they get a warm experience on their first posts, so don’t hesitate to jump in and say hello / offer some help when you see one of newbie posts.

We are in the process of adding another Steam moderator, once it’s all sorted out I am going to invite him to this forum as well and let him introduce himself to all of us.

Staff and game
As usual, I would like to share some news with you about the team and company that are not known to the rest of the community yet. For one, the holiday season is starting in Sweden, a lot of team members are leaving for vacations, so it’s getting very quiet (and cozy) in the office. The development has slowed down significantly as well and this summer we’ll be focusing on improving the game quality (mostly when it comes to server stability and game crashed, but also “normal” bugs) over developing new content.

As you know from our status updates, the team has recently grown significantly over the last months and it’s mostly new faces here (I am soon going to be “oldest” one, hehe). Despite the majority of theHunter veterans have left, we are still managing to maintain that warm and happy family feeling that we all really appreciate when coming to work every day. Unfortunately, two more oldies are leaving us - our Lead Client Programmer Danny has found himself a new game development adventure in Canada and our game designer Daniel here in Stockholm. It’s sad for us but cool for them! We’ve already found a replacement for Danny and are looking for someone to fill Daniel’s shoes, although it probably won’t be easy.

Personal
Lately I’ve been watching lots of football and learning how to drive.I haven’t managed to get my driving license until now and I thought it would be a good time to start. It’s not going super smooth but I am getting there :) I am not taking any vacations this summer, so I will have plenty of time on my hands. Today I also got amazing news that finally, after 5 years in Sweden, I got my Swedish citizenship, yay! I am super happy and a bottle of champagne is due to be popped open tonight.

In a couple of day there is a big Swedish holiday - Midsummer, so we’ll be doing some bbq-ing and boating.

I haven’t seen you nor talked to you guys much recently, so I would like to hear what’s been going on in your life, how you feel about theHunter, the state of the game and community, and anything really that you would like to share.

Stay well!

I'm sure they won't (well maybe they'll miss the people) but I expect Expansive Worlds will regret them leaving theHunter!

All good from my point of view too. I've noticed the influx of new forum members. Unfortunately it seems to have happened at a time when the game is instable, which is not good for us moderators, or for Expansive Worlds in terms of customer retention and first impressions. Hopefully the backend issues get sorted out soon and enough of the new players stick around and, if not already, become members!

Thanks for the update. Really glad to hear about the focus on Quality. It seems a lot of minor bugs have been overshadowed by major bugs, which are now overshadowed by the critical bugs (crashes & lost connections).

Sad to see both Danny & Daniel leaving. I hope DJ's replacement will enjoy making some really difficult missions!

Personal: Every weekend here in the summer is a holiday! BBQ, boating, standing in the lake & drinking. Fish-Fly (May Fly) festival is this weekend. Carnival, live bands, parade, fireworks, all to celebrate the hatching of these nasty little b@stards... In the past they have been so thick the weather radar thought they were a rainstorm.

Happy Summer!!! (It goes by way to quickly)
It's "Tod", with one bloody 'd'!

Hey there people,

finally it's a nice and warm (some might even say a little sticky) evening here in Germany, but the next thunderstorms are already predicted for the weekend - we have had a lot of rain in the last few weeks, it's ugly.
I had a very promising job interview this morning - I've gotten quite peed (why does the other word get censored, seriously?) about my job recently and am trying to find a new one. I was promised to hear the decision next week and am hoping for a positive one. I'll keep you updated.

Congrats to being a Swede now, Alena! You have just made the transition from belonging to a non-EURO football team to belonging to a rubbish football team. :P
And good luck with the driver's license. If I may share an awkward experience of myself, I failed my first driver's test because I was entering a one-way road from the wrong side! The second try was succesful though... But I'm sure you will be more talented than me! Will David let you drive his MR2 Roadster? (Now you really know I'm a good Internet stalker, David!)

I will try to be more active with the housekeeping, I know I've been slacking off a bit. Great to hear that fixing those major bugs and crashes will be a priority over the summer. I would love to play without the constant fear of crashing just after finding a big buck and I would really really love to play more multiplayer. Keep on convincing the management that these problems are destroying the game.

That's it for now, have a great day or nice evening, whatever time zone you're in right now! :D

Wow, that was a while ago! I was scratching my head wondering how the hell you knew about that, then remembered that I posted a question in the MR2 owner's club forum with the same username. You dirty stalker :)

Good luck with the job, hope it turns out well for you.

Thanks!

I think I was searching for the UHC site link from my cell phone while I wasn't at home and didn't know better than to google "caledonianblues" (I was new to the forums, not even a member probably) and somehow this other forum was shown and I just had to take a look. :)

Nah, not yet are we doomed :) We still have plenty of shot int he locker. Although I am sad as well, I am going to miss both of them a lot.

Yes, very true. Do you remember the good old times when we got upset about bugs like the spinning scope one not being fixed?

Sad to see both Danny & Daniel leaving. I hope DJ's replacement will enjoy making some really difficult missions!

Sounds like a dream :)

Good luck at the interview Marc, hope it'll work out for you!

About the football team - sigh, I was keeping my last hope for a miracle yesterday, but alas. They are too bad. I should have stayed in Germany hehe.

I am doing hard work with the management about the problems destroying the game, it looks like they listen. Sometimes ;)

what i really wanna know is what is causing the server issue?
is your code old and/or faulty? do you not have enough servers for all the data and players that need to be handled?

It's difficult. For one, the code is old an inefficient, plus a lot of different people have worked on it in the many years the game has been alive. But I don't know everything and I am actually not sure that our backend guys know the exact reason either.
