Question about rifling on firearms

Post by InvisibleFlame9 »

Why do some hunting rifles I see have rifling on the outside of the barrel? Personally I don't own firearms in real life, even though I'm fascinated by them and one day hope to take up hunting as a hobby. Sometimes I see these hunting videos where guys have rifles with what looks to be rifling on the outside of the barrel. This confused me. What would be the purpose of that? I stumbled on this article that may answer that question. It seems from what I can tell that this has become the latest fad. I don't like the looks of a fluted barrel at all. Could this be just the latest silly trend in the world of firearms and nothing more?

Aesthetics, weight reduction, faster cooling.....But mainly aesthetics.

Hey Fletchette! Long time no see! I'll never forget your tutorial showing how to install this game without needing the launcher. My my have things changed!

So it is more about aesthetics! Is this 'fluted barrel' a newer thing? I don't remember ever seeing rifles like this until recently.

It certainly helps with weight. Heat should not be a problem in hunting weapons. Oh wait I forgot feral hog extermination!
Well in regard to heat, the fluting might help with cooling off faster, but due to the lesser mass, the barrel will also heat up faster.

Interesting topic! I have a couple fluted barrel boom booms, In theory? 2 things, reduce weight but mainly to increase surface area for heat dissipation. Personally, I think it's "foo foo dust" and just something for aesthetics - makes it attractive. if the same 2 guns are sxs, one is fluted, one a straight taper, you're picking up the fluted HAHA! ... I would too.
@Fletchette You've done the prairie dog thing, in a long distance accuracy situation as such, I've heard both pro and con yet, heat is heat and it is going to have an effect. he would know as well as anyone.

I had a 22-250 Savage, soda straw barrel. Initially, I could get 1, 2 shots in a couple minutes and by the 3rd you might well put it up because it was useless until it cooled down. I had that gun re-barreled/chambered to 22-250 Ackley Improved with a Shilen #9 contour bench barrel and a McMillen carbon/boron bench stock with bedding/pillars. You couldn't heat that barrel up enough to move the zero, but needed a wheel barrel to haul it around HAHA!
