1900's English gentleman hunter

Post by Aruld »

Does anyone know what kind of weapons an English gentleman might have used circa 1900? It's for some themed in game hunting I plan for myself.

When I see photos of them they usually have a break action shot gun or some kind of over/under break action rifle. Therefore the side by side shotgun, the F3 O/U shotgun, and rifles like maybe the 9.3x74R would be fitting to use. They would have probably also used the 30-30 Lever action because, after all, that was an extremely popular rifle from the time it was invented in 1894 through the 1900s because it was the first rapid fire "repeating" rifle. I haven't been able to find any "gentleman" hunters said to or photo'd with bolt action or semi-auto rifles. Those things aren't gentleman-like :P

The 74R makes sense in my opinion because it was introduced by Germany around 1900 as a high powered break-action gun that also came in combination guns, which we do have in the game too.

30-30 Lever Action (1894 repeater - "The gun that won the war")

All of these rifles were available in the 1900s.

Here's an article I found on the subject that has some interesting info, mostly about their wardrobe:

Don't forget about the Sharps rifle in 45-70, it would be a couple of decades old but relatively up to date.

I've not bought one of them yet but they seem to be powerful weapons.

Would it be shotguns for smaller targets or a different rifle to the suggestions?

I guess for small targets it's either bird shot, arrows or the .17 hmr lever action. The caliber is modern, but the mechanics are more or less the same as a Henry rifle.
