I give up. Another bad shot made because I just can't see the sights on the caplock. I took the name and feel obligated to use the gun but I can't put up with the poor shooting i'm doing with it. My cataract is getting too bad to use open sights anymore. My bad, but i'm going to use a more modern weapon with an illuminated scope.

I might as well go modern with it all. My traditional days are done. Even in a game. I had a good run at it but I can't fight getting old. I thought a fresh start would help. At least I got the female kills off my record, so it wasn't all in vain.

Sorry for all the changing things but i'm stubborn and don't like to give up on anything. I shouldn't have dragged you guys through it. I'll keep stuff like this to myself from now on.

I tried to talk to my dog about this but he just brought me his leash.

Have you tried a scope on a cap lock?

Yes, Randy i have the primitive scope which is the only one offered for the caplock. It ha thin black crosshairs. I find them harder to see in timber than the open sights.

Staying with muzzleloaders I could get the inline. It's a Thompson Center Triumph. I actually owned one. I never hunted with it but I was planning on it.

In game it comes with a couple of scopes. The 2x6 has an illuminated reticle. So that whole setup would work good for me. I'd have to change ammo according to the animals I hunt. The conical for big game like elk and moose and the .45 sabot for med animals like deer.

I'd hate to be attacked by a bear with the sabot loaded, so I bought a sure cure for bear attacks. The ,454 handgun. It should ruin a bears day.

It's a good all around system and will let me hunt for all the animals i'm interested in. I can use my modern muzzleloader rules to make it more challenging. Clothes are an option. I'll wear whatever I feel like that day. Treestands? Maybe. I'll think about it.

A Roosevelt comp starts tomorrow that will let me test it all.

Well I was going to recommend you try out the 9.3x74R with the 1.1-8x30 illuminated scope for your modern hunting but I just got done reading your customer service thread and see that you already got it.

Glad that all worked out for you.

Now the only question is: How many days will it take you to forget about the bad shot and pick up the caplock again. :)

Should we start a pool? I think we should start a pool
Have a MeLLoW Day 8-)

I just took a couple of young bulls with the inline. Knocked them down pretty good.

Back to the caplock? I wouldn't bet on it. After all. It is my name. I'll put in my bet too. I'll take tomorrow morning at the start of the comp.

I'm really not like this in real life. Honest. No.......honest. Ask Buddy. No, don't ask Buddy. He'll say anything if you take him for a walk.

Hi Pete, now that you mentioned it in a previous post, you need to tell us about when you were making a living from skeet shooting. How is that possible?

Sure, but it wasn't skeet. I don't believe there's any money in that. I'm talking about trap shooting. Two different types of shooting.

This was in the 70's and I believe it was at it's peak then. It was a tour. The big money shoots were sponsored by the big casino hotels in Reno and Vegas. Phoenix also had big shoots. Besides the money put up by sponsors the shooters would pay entry fees. The big shoots were a week long. Each day would have singles, doubles, and handicap shoots. All the money was in handicap and it was all I shot. As your skill and performance increased you stood farther back on the field and of course that made you shots longer. I was on the 27yd line which was as far back as we could go. A shooter could shoot all the days competitions or only one. They were like separate events. The most money was the events on the final weekend. It would cost a shooter about $1000 for entree fees if they shot the whole event. I shot every day but just the handicap. So< it had 7 shoots for the week. I shot against the best shooters for the most money. We could win hundreds of thousands of dollars. No fooling around with buddies shooting at the local trap range. This was serious. I had a custom Perazzi trap gun built for me. It fit me like a glove. I loved that gun and it won me a bunch of money.

We had many big shoots throughout the year. There were also local shoots that put on shoots for money almost every weekend. LA was a hot spot with quite a few ranges. I based myself in Redondo Beach during those times. If you shot at every range you could shoot for money every weekend. I did. Between the local shoots and the big shoots I made a good living. way more than I ever could working. About 5 times as much. Shooters would travel to the big shoots from all over the country and beyond. A lot would come in campers, motorhomes and a lot would do like me and stay at the hotels sponsoring the shoots. They gave us a huge discount. They knew most of us would gamble too.

I quit when gas prices started to get really high. That really hurt the turn out and low turnout meant low payouts. To keep shooters coming they started to pay way down the list. No more big purses to win. I decided to get out. I bought a new Peterbilt 18 wheeler and went trucking.

No matter what I did for a living. I always managed to do my elk hunt every year. Nothing could stop that and I always put myself in position to not have to answer to a boss. So, free time was never a problem.

Now, here I am playing a hunting game. Life has a lot of twists and turns.

You can imagine how stiff the competition was with that kind of money on the line. The handicap even was at 4 different fields. We shot 25 rounds at each field. You needed a 99-100 score to win. Throw in windy conditions and you had to be just about perfect. I remember one shoot with the wind coming right at us. Everyone was trying to figure where to hold during practice. I was too until I got crazy with an experiment and help 5-6ft above the bird. I smoked it. I didn't say a word and stop practicing. Everyone would have saw what I was doing right away if I kept shooting.

Our event started and I checked the wind and it was still the same. Everyone was missing but me. I won by a bunch and it was a great payout. I invited all the shooters in my squad to dinner. It was good times and a great way to make a living. All I did was practice during the week. All with factory ammo. Soft for reloading was too soft back then and gave a lousy pattern. The hard shot made all went into factory ammo. I spent a fortune buying it but it paid off in competition. Guys who reloaded never did well. They never could figure out more money spent on ammo resulted in bigger wins.

It's fun to look back on it. I wish I was still doing it. I couldn't hit the side of a barn with my vision now.
