Does heavy rain and fog affect animals ability to detect the player?
A couple of questions;
1# Like with heavy rain if you are close to an animal will your movement be more dampened to them because of the heavy rain?
2# Fog reduces your ability to see clearly ahead, is this the same for animals?

Rain reduces the animals' senses, at least that's what the devs said years ago and from my personal experience I'd confirm this. Fog, as far as I know, does not affect the animals.

After playing this game more than 7 years I never noticed any difference if it's raining or not.

Rain and wind did reduce at least hearing of the animals, but who knows how things are after 2013 MP update. I noticed the effect before the update, but after the update I am not that sure it is still in effect.
Regarding fog, it probably does not reduce anything (other than our abilities to see ). I think the closest to the official response to your question would be that one time dev said "if you can't walk trough it, animal can't see through it."

#1 Reduce sound you create vs all animals.
#2 Doesn't affect the animals in any way.

The last official statement I can remember is from 2012. The question was "Does rain mask my walking sounds?" and the response was
But since then, many, many things have changed, a lot of features were lost and never restored. If anyone has a later official statement please post.
Fog has no effect whatsoever. At low settings you don't see the same fog than with high settings, anyway.

Re: Does heavy rain and fog affect animals ability to detect the player?
It did, i remember having deer walking right next to me(and sometimes over me literally) in heavy rain without spook, but of course you get the same drawback, of not being able to see too far either, but as HooCairs said there has been so many changes that is hard to know if still is working like that, something i have noticed and my be coincidence only, is that i had almost none heavy rain hunts in the last year, so i couldn't say for sure about if animals are still getting affected, one statement from Devs would clear this up.
"Turkeys...the only animal smarter than man."
