.340 vs .45-70 vs .405
Hi,
I'm considering buying one of the above mentioned cannons for dealing with the monsters of Piccabeen Bay. Yesterday I shot a couple of Water Buffalo with the .454 and found the results to be underwhelming.
Now, I'm not asking for things I can read in the store description or deduce from the excellent youtube presentations made by the community. I know what scopes the guns take (or don't take), how they sound, how quick the reload is etc. I don't know how reliable they are at putting down Buffalos, Bisons etc. Is there a significant difference? Are the guns better than the .454 revolver or do I simply need to git gud at shot placement?

I dont hunt PB much, just dont care for the map. I spent some time in jungles & have no desire to spend anymore real or virtually so I cant offer water buffalo specific advice. However I believe you will find all 3 of them will perform excellently on WB so the question really becomes personal preference. Feel like you need plenty of magnification buy the 340 & put a good scope on it. Like classic thump buy the 45-70 (I guess you could buy the leveraction, I was thinking the Sharps) or if you want a classic with quick follow up shots get the 405.
If you dont ascribe to any particular theme then get the 45-70 lever action. You can get good magnification & fast follow up shots.

I own all three. If I had to choose one it would be the 45-70 lever gun

.405? No point, other two guns can do what that gun does at far + scopes.
I know some may argue that the .405 is for close encounters well I just say take the scopes off the two other guns and you have the same thing.
I'd say get the .340 rifle but that's cause I like bolt action rifles better than lever action.

I have over 1337 kills with my Longbow at 100% kill rate.

Re: .340 vs .45-70 vs .405
I own all three as well, I don't dislike any.
But 45-70 I enjoy for run and gun on WRR for moose and bison and the occasional hog hunt.
.405 is fun but not great. It is effective for WB.
In a pinch though if I had to choose one Id go with the.340 I trust it a lot more for that long shot where I must have that kill. Also as Ravenousfox mentioned it is bolt action, which maybe makes me slow down a bit for a better shot.
That's my opinion. Have a fine Navy Day!

The .340 the best option for WB on PB. The other two have limitations, but the .340 is a stone cold killer all the way to render. I once took 5 WB's before they disappeared, and the clip is only 3 shots! Stone.Cold.Killer.

Like Ron, the .340 would be my choice. The .45-70 is a great gun too.
