Meet the German Pointer

Hi all!

As promised I'm putting together some written info about your latest hunting sidekick.

Our previous dogs (the Retriever and Scent Hound) specialised in assisting you with recovering dead game, or hunting those that were wounded. The Pointer however helps you FIND that game in the first place! When using the Pointer's special ability from the "V" command menu he/she will strike out and scan the area for traces of your prey. When one is found it will assume the "point" position with neck extended and paws raised to direct you to the animal in question. If there are no prey animals initially in the area your dog will roam until a trail is picked up.

Image

You have three colourings to choose from right now, Dark Brown, Chocolate Milk, and Brown. You can choose either male or female. I should also mention that we have a limited "Founders" Pointer collar for you to pick up too, check in store before it disappear. ;)

Now, onto the mechanics:

Your Pointer will always detect the closest animal of the type you commanded it to find. The radius of detection varies with skill. The animals you find with your dog are as follows:

Level 1: Pheasants, Ptarmigan, Ducks, Turkey, Rabbits of all types.
Level 2: Foxes, Geese, and Coyote
Level 3: Bobcat and Deer (this doesn't include Moose/Elk)

So initially you can use your dog to seek out level one prey, then level two as your dog gets more experienced, and finally the third tier when he's a little more seasoned.

The type of animals your dog will find aren't the only thing that improves with experience. There are hidden passive abilities that also improve with level, see below for the full run-down:

Awareness
This skill controls how successful a dog is at generally finding animals in the area after every 10 seconds of having Detection active. Here are the digits:

Awareness Level 1 = 40% success rate check every 10 seconds
Awareness Level 2 = 70% success rate check every 10 seconds
Awareness Level 3 = 100% success rate check every 10 seconds

Detection Range
This skill dictates how far out your dog can pick up signs of an animal. Here are the digits once again:

Detection Range Level 1 = 120m from the player
Detection Range Level 2 = 160m from the player
Detection Range Level 3 = 200m from the player

Detection Recovery
This skill determines how long you'll need to wait before the dog can detect another animal. After the dog successfully detects a nearby animal, this timer will activate where the dog can no longer detect another animal until the countdown ends.

Detection Recovery Level 1 = 5 minute interval until next usage of Detection Skill
Detection Recovery Level 2 = 2 minute interval until next usage of Detection Skill
Detection Recovery Level 3 = 30 seconds interval until next usage of Detection Skill

Detection Accuracy
This skill determines the safe distance away from the animal it's tracking. The lower the level the closer the dog gets to the tracked animal thus the higher possibility that you potentially spook the animal before being able to see it. Once your faithful companion gets to the skill specified distance it will then stop completely in a pointing pose towards the animal's exact position.

Detection Accuracy Level 1 = 20 meters away from animal before pointing.
Detection Accuracy Level 2 = 30 meters away from animal before pointing.
Detection Accuracy Level 3 = 40 meters away from animal before pointing.

Critical Position
This skill is a passive skill that notifies you when an animal enters an alerted state when detecting your presence. Basically it's a way for your dog to say "Shhhh! You are scaring away the game!". This skill will activate based off a success rate and when it works an exclamation point will show up in the corner for 5 seconds together with the dog whimpering as a means of letting you know to go prone or stop moving. This only applies to animals you are tracking/moving towards.

This skill will however only affect animals that transition from calm to alert/attentive state. It will not work on other state transitions like nervous to alert.

Critical Position Level 1 = 30% success rate upon closest animal entering alert state
Critical Position Level 2 = 60% success rate upon closest animal entering alert state
Critical Position Level 3 = 90% success rate upon closest animal entering alert state

And some final useful information, we have a special discounted bundle (https://www.thehunter.com/#store/50) that is available for THIS WEEK ONLY. So don't miss out. ;)

I picked up a chocolate milk male, with collar. Very beautiful color on the dog! Named him William after my favorite Westworld char :P I can already say that the animations are fascinating. Watching him take loads of air scent then occasionally drop his nose to the ground and rush off after a smell is very cool, and very realistic.

I can't wait to skill him up!

Congrats again to the winners!

Edit -- psssst... the chocolate milk dog's nose is black! Did you forget to change it

Thanks for the pics and info. Too bad I didn't wait before buying the founder's collar since I'd have received it within one of the temporary bundles but oh well, thanks Graham/EW! Now to decide which color, hmm..

Terrific job on giving some love to the dogs in general, really. My retriever no longer runs in front of me(ever) and she's far quieter. It's actually kind of creepy, but I surely prefer this over constantly tripping on her, lol. The "in-the-blind" bird drop off is fantastic, what a time/spook saver this is, and my lvl 50 never once failed a retrieve command or got caught up on the blind. Amazing!

Been wanting a pointer for awhile. Shame it can't fetch dead birds though. Even if you were to restrict the "fetch" ability to upland game birds only. Leave the waterfowl for the labs. Picked one up regardless and took it out on his first pheasant hunt. Bird hunting is so much more fun with a dog.
