Dog getting xp for non-completed tasks.

I had this happen a few times when asking my dog to fetch ducks. I'd issue the command and I'd get the icon with the exclamation mark indicating that the dog had understood the command to fetch a duck, but he would just wander around and not fetch. He would however get the xp as if he had done the task. When asked a second time, he would then go get the duck and bring it back, presumable getting xp twice for the same task.

I was duck hunting in a SP game, wearing B&C camo, shooting the 12ga pump with no scope. Had a blind setup and 24 duck decoys nearby. I had a male brown lab with the leather collar.
