Is the Pheasant retrieval still messed up?

I noticed a while ago that when labs retrieved pheasants, the pheasant wasn't even in the dog's mouth, and kinda just dragged on the ground with an invisible space between his mouth and bird. Just wanted to know if this was fixed before buying a new dog.
