I haven't seen any date about results, but I hope it's soon. It would also be cool to know, before the results, how many people submitted ideas for each animals.

The competition is now closed. Thanks for all your entries everyone, we've received around 60 submissions, wow! Off the top if my head, Bison and Sitka have been the most popular species, but I'll need to check my numbers. I've only made a brief scan but I was really impressed by many of the entries and I am really looking forward to reading all of them! After I and our game designers have made the assessment, we'll announce the results in one of the next status updates. We'll try to do as soon as we can, however, it might take a bit, due to the large amount of worthy entries.

Thanks again for your engagement and creativity!

... and the winners are:
Congratulations guys, please send me a PM with a prize of your choice. Thanks for everyone who participated, we had a lot of fun reading your works and some of them might find their place in theHunter at some point. The bison missions were especially difficult to choose from, as we had a number of very strong contenders there. The runner up in this category is Kache with his legendary French Canadian Mountain man and Bison Hunting Master - Bison Lebeaux (loved him!). @Kache, you can also send me a PM and pick the prize, as we most likely implement your set as well in some way or another.

You can find the winning original submissions below. Please note that those are not final and might be modified by the devs.

Bison missions by Villkatta

Bison missions by Villkatta
Notes to the mission set:
Being a student of history and real life hunter, I tried to combine a historic approach with some real life scientific challenges tied to managing wild animal populations.
I hope it will combine fun with the possibility to learn something.

Mission set intro text:
Doc's cousin, the bison specialist & self-proclaimed historian William Bovin has urgently requested his help in supervising the mighty bison herds of the Whiterime Ridge. Not really keen on catching a cold, Doc sent you in his place.

Mission 1: Off on the wrong foot

"Good evening hunter and welcome to Whiterime Ridge. Since Doc sent you in his place I'm sure you're as skilled about these magnificent creatures as he is. What? You've never seen a bison in your life?! You've got to be joking, Doc sent me a novice?! Unbelievable. Well, what are you waiting for? Go and have a look at some! And remember to dress warmly!"

Objective:
  • Spot a bison

Mission 2: A history lesson

"Well, now at least you know what they look like. I suppose some history is in order if you're going to work with me. Ah-hem: The American bison, also known as the buffalo, once roamed the continent of northern America counting millions of individuals. However, due to the merciless slaughter of man, the number was reduced to barely 300 in the U.S. alone around 1900. Thankfully some wise conservationists took action. It's their work we continue to build upon today. Now then, go and track some bison's for me."

Objective:
  • ID the tracks from a unique bison
  • ID the tracks from a second unique bison
  • ID the tracks from a third unique bison

Mission 3: "The man who saved the buffalo"

"One of these great conservationists was James "Scotty" Philip. He decided to save the bison from extinction and in 1899 he bought a herd of 74 animals. Sadly, this great man died suddenly in 1911, but his herd had grown to about a 1000 animals at that time. At the burial even the bison's showed up to pay their respects. This herd later helped restock others around America. There was however, and still is a problem with breeding on such a small herd, which is where you come in. But first: go and get your hands dirty."

Objective:
  • ID the droppings of a bison
  • ID the droppings of another bison

Mission 4: Genetic issues

"As the dropping samples proves, the genetic variation is too small. The result when breeding on a small herd. Due to this we need to take out some of our older bulls so that new ones can be introduced. But first I want to see if you're up to such a task. I'll issue you a permit to hunt a bison for me. For the greater good of the herd of course. Keep in mind that they are tough creatures and require your most powerful gun, like the .300 or similar. Take your time when aiming to ensure a fast kill."

Objective:
  • Harvest a bison

Mission 5: Bad blood

"Not bad, you may actually be of some use. I need to be certain though, going after these bulls is both difficult and dangerous. Mind you, bison are responsible for more attacks on people than bears. There is one particularly grumpy bull in the reserve which is responsible for at least 5 attacks, all on local hunters. They have named him "Bill". I still haven't decided on his fate yet, as he is from an important blood line. We'll get back to that. Now I need you to take down a female that you collected that dropping from. A further analysis shows that she has genes from domestic cattle in her, and I can't allow that to spread. And make it a clean kill."

Objective:
  • Harvest a female bison at 100% harvest value

Mission 6: History repeats itself

"Good work, that was a necessary action. I think you are ready for a real task. I want you to take out 3 bulls in order to make room for new ones. Not hard you say? Alright, let's up the stakes a little shall we? Go old school and use the muzzleloader for the task, and take all 3 in one hunt. But don't use the old smoke pole for this, it's too weak. Or a Springfield model 1863 - the bison hate that one. Go for a modern inline in stead."

Objective:
  • Harvest a male bison using the inline muzzleloader loaded with a .50 conical bullet.
  • Harvest another male bison using the inline muzzleloader loaded with a .50 conical bullet in the same hunt.
  • Harvest another male bison using the inline muzzleloader loaded with a .50 conical bullet in the same hunt.

Mission 7: Plague-ridden

"Bad news, it turns out one of my finest cows has been infected with a highly contagious disease: malignant catarrhal fever and there are no vaccine against it. Damn thing has spread through farmers way south of the reserve. For the sake of the herd she must be removed pronto. Make sure before you fire that it's really her. You'll recognize her by her size, she is a big lady. And bring out the big gun, I won't allow her to suffer!"

Objective:
  • ID the call of a female bison
  • Spot a female bison in the same hunt
  • Harvest a female bison weighting min. 450kg in the same hunt using any 45-70 lever action rifle

Mission 8: Dirty history

"Thank you my friend, that was a close call. You know, I'm going to ask another favour from you, but before I do I want you to do something important. Back during the mass slaughter of bison in the 19th century one of the fouler motives behind was to deprive the plain Indians from their main source of food and resources. Even president Grant and general Sheridan desired the bison exterminated only for this end. I want you to honour both the natives and the bison by harvesting one using a traditional bow. Rest assured, the whole animal will be made use of, meat, hide, bones everything."

Objective:
  • Harvest a bison killed with the recurve bow

Mission 9: Viva la Revolution

"I've received word that 4 young bulls from fresh bloodlines are ready to be released in the reserve. I still think some more of the older bulls should be removed to avoid conflicts. You're the only one I trust for the task. Take out 2 of the old kings and the way should be clear for the newcomers. Consider it a little revolution, just without the guillotine."

Objective:
  • Harvest a male bison scoring at least 110
  • Harvest another male bison scoring at least 110

Mission 10: Challenging "Buffalo Bill" (single player)

"Disaster! A deer-hunter has been gored to death by Bill. This can't continue. Although the protection of the bison is our primal goal, we can't have a killer bison running around. We risk people taking matters into their own hands. Please go and take care of this. But since Bill has given this reserve so many fine calves, I feel he deserves an honourable end. A duel so to speak. Bring a powerful revolver and challenge him to a fight. He was last seen around the windy hill to the west. You'll recognize him by his broken left horn."

Objective:
  • Harvest the male bison "Buffalo Bill" last seen at the "Windy Hill" (X: -6464, Y: -10096) using any permitted revolver without a scope.
Final Message from William Bovin:
Thank you hunter! Through your hard work the bison of the Whiterime Ridge will continue to thrive in the years that come!
