Obviously, I need to dumb it down for the Yanks. It isn't that you couldn't figure out how the third Sitka should score, 'cause you did it right without that extra parenthesis. So, what was the problem? Respect,

Ha... the problem was that it was after midnight so I was tired and I wasn't thinking correctly, so I did "bad math'... but then realized what I did, but THEN I realized you probably WROTE bad math in the first place, so that's actually what you meant...

... ha - I found the old video we had of that song teasing the pastor about his "Canadian math disability", along with his musical timings. Ugh- it's 13 years old! No wonder the quality is crap! It was a fun night, though, with lots of laughs. What, because one ( is missing math scientists can't figure it out... . Post here how you'd like to see it, and I'll fix it, wouldn't want folks wondering how to do the scoring of the third Sitka. Silly math folk. Respectfully,

PEMDAS = (P)arentheses, (E)xponents, (M)ultiplication, (D)ivision, (A)ddition, and (S)ubtraction).....The order you perform operations.

So you could write it :

(score + weight) * harvest value = simplest.
or
(score * harvest value) + (weight * harvest value) = parentheses not actually needed, but make it clearer.

It's kinda like if someone brings you a plate of back bacon, flapjacks, and doughnuts. There is a certain order you're suppose to eat them, but....Oh crap, now I'm hungry.

(Score (+) Weight in lbs. (x) Harvest Value %) other than that last bracket after % is that where the confusion is? Or is it the (+) after Score or the (X) after weight? To be honest they read the same to me. How could you even compare back bacon, flapjacks, and doughnuts to simple math. Respect,

It's because in math you don't necessary do things left to right. You do multiplication before you do addition, UNLESS there are parenthesis, which you do first.

So:

2 + 3 * 4 = 2 + 12 = 14.

If you want the addition to be done first (before the multiplication) you put parenthesis around the numbers to be added.

(2 + 3) * 4 = (5 * 4) = 20.

Since you want the second result (20), your ROE should read:

(Score (+) Weight in lbs.) (x) Harvest Value % =

If you want an extra set of parenthesis around the whole formula, that's fine too...

As @splainin2do pointed out, if the entry had a 100% harvest value it wouldn't matter, but for anything less than 100% the difference could be large.

For example:

100 + 200 * 50% = 200
but
(100 + 200) * 50% = 150

If you want to test it for yourself, just type:

100+200*50% into your Google search bar or an Excel formula. The answer will be 200.

Then type (100+200)*50% and try it again. You'll see you get 150.

Not terrible, quite beatable.. but it's way past bedtime again.

Actually got another chance at this... no luck, but another chance. At least there were no bad shots- just tiny sitka! I guess it's my punishment for opening that can of math worms...
