Ashley, I thought I read somewhere in your story that we are going for the weight that the check station estimated it to be. Is that the case or are we going for the weight of your bear after it was field dressed?

You are correct. You are going for the live weight-- the weight of the animal prior to being field dressed. Like Tod said, most people normally don't carry or have access to scales in the woods, so the bears are field dressed, weighed at a check-in station, and the officials add back a certain percentage of weight to account for the guts. That number, with guts in, is the weight you want.

It's interesting seeing the bonuses change hands this late in the comp. One minute someone thinks their high scoring bear is solid, the next minute they have not only lost to a higher scoring bear but are left with no realistic chance at the comp either.
