I think competitions are updated immediately. So if the player is still in the hunt and this one had one open for 23 hours it is natural that the total number in the competition will increase.

yes in one attempt it would. In this case many attempts were shown to have been used. The exploit being that said person had a lower score from original attempt, and was able to use a second attempt or more to raise score I personally tested it to be a fact that it can be exploited. It has to be intentional because if you do the first one in single it would burn your attempt leaving no attempts. Meaning said person is aware of the situation and exploiting it.
