Zooming in on the map will help sometimes. The mouse wheel is what I use to zoom in.

You can aim downward, but only to a limit. (45° ?) You can not aim downward everywhere. Sometimes you seem to be "locked" to look straight or up. It seems to depend on where you're lying. yea... this is very frustrating to say the least... especially when you're trying to make a long dist...
