The .17 HMR in real life is only used for SMALL game rabbit size MAX
To use it on deer is NUTS

It's not about shooting deer with the .17 HMR.
It's about being able to do it. Out to 120m it makes a devastating fox round IRL.
Heck, after the war, my grandfather shot roe deer in the head with a little .22 semi automatic.
And that was very effective. The .17HMR is, mind you, a .22 Magnum necked down to .177 caliber, so this shouldn't pose any problem whatsoever.
A guy I know once shot a female roe deer behind the shoulder blade with a .22 Magnum out of an insert barrel in a Drilling (by accident) and it was dead as a stone after 30 meters.
Goes to show it working IRL. So why shouldn't it work here. And the fox thing is just ridiculous.
Spends all the gold and money to buy new weapons in the shape of guns.

Don't forget our friend the TURKEY. Man's best "friend" after the chicken. The .17 HMR works amazing on it too.

Sorry to necro post but this one isnt long dead...

Been trying to decide on buying the HMR or the Plinkington. I'm mainly thinking for rabbits. What y'all think, which is the better way to go?

I am not given to spamming my shots. If I miss clean I let them go. If I wound, I track them till I find them so I really dont need a semi auto.

if you dont want to consider a shotgun for rabbits i would recommend the hmr. on rabbits they work great, even with leg shots, and you dont have the drop after 100m like with the plinkington. only thing; im still not 100% sure if they have the same spooking radius.

I believe the spook radius is smaller on the plinkington. But I do not own the .17HMR to test it.

I know the Plinkinton does not spook animals beyond 75 meters. Maybe someone with the .17HMR can check if it is the same or more.

I think one big advantage of the .17HMR is that it has no (or almost no) bullet drop within render range, so aiming is easier than with the Plinkington.

What is so powerful on .17 HMR ?
You have Eo ~ 330 Joule and ~ 170 Joule at 100m.
.17 HMR is for pigeons, crows and Fox < 80m.

You need min. 1000 Joule at 100m in Germany for Roe Deer => .223
