I still happen a little too often to only hurt the animal that I hunted. And in pursuing it, it's hard to know if it's the animal that's hurt in our line of sight. So we quickly ended up with several injured annimals. That's why, it would be nice to have a counter that tells us the number of animals not taken (wounded or died without distinction).
It's even more useful when hunting for birds, except that I noticed animals that were injured and continued to still flying.

I assume you mean a counter of injured and not yet harvested animals whilst in-game, so you can be sure when you exit the game whether you're going to receive a snot-o-gram from Doc?

Yes that's exactly it. Thank you for clarifying my words, but it must not be invasive. I thought of the tab key as multiplayer to see it is the current hunt.
