Can I Shoot It? A tool for permitted animals/weapons/ammo

Post by Xeygwyn »

Updating the first post to reflect changes and current updates to the tool~ (Thanks Hawkeye!)

Can I Shoot It? is a tool for you to quickly determine whether a weapon/ammunition type is permissible for a specific species, or vice versa. All require Java to run.
The initial version shown below can be found here: http://bit.ly/2yKzZeE is all text-based as a drop down menu for a quick 'yes' or 'no' answer.

A sample image here:

The secondary version is a visual aid with the ability to choose between a Weapon to Animal list, or an Animal to Permitted Weapons list. It comes with tooltips upon hovering over the image to show you exactly what animals are listed, or in the case of Animal to Weapon, what other animals can be shot with the same list.

A couple images here (note that these are not the full-size of the actual window, but resized for the forums - they're much closer to the one above):

Version 2 can be found here: http://bit.ly/2y659A9

I also created a much larger version for those with small-text trouble (my 'low-view' version) or simply for those that would prefer a bigger set of images. It's the same as above, just...much larger. Lol.

The big version can be found here: http://bit.ly/2xC1I3H

I've already made a few corrections thanks to feedback, have updated with cleaner images, and have tried to make them as accurate as possible. I might wrap in the ammo version with images to make it a complete set. Still, please let me know if you see any issues. Also provided are VirusTotal scans simply for the sake of it being a 3rd-party tool, and to let you see exactly what's in the files.

Initial version scan: http://bit.ly/2xZgp13
Version 2 scan: http://bit.ly/2hwFtSx
Low-View Version scan: http://bit.ly/2xOvxxA

Again, a huge thank you for all the great words so far. It means a lot! :)

is white hair on men the same as a blonde ......i would use a program like that, but i would go with the animal first, then the weapon and then the ammo....... :D

It is pretty cool idea. I'd use it. But I do agree with Outrider- it would be easier if I could select an animal- and then have the drop down show what Doc considers ethical ammo. Other than that, even if you left it as is, I'd give it a try. Nicely done. ;) Peace.

I can probably do a swapped selection list where it could go either way. My main reason for doing it this way was I always end up bringing out a rifle and THEN try to figure out what I'm gunna shoot, as well as that there's a lot less ammo to deal with than a list of weapons :D
I do like the idea of the option, though. I'd been thinking I of letting people switch between making it weapon -> list of permitted animals and list of animals -> permitted weapons, just to cover all bases. I'd probably have that separate and keep this as a basic tool, and just package them together to let y'all decide. Neither would be difficult to update after finished.

Thanks for the feedback!

you've got a wonder full little application there, thank you for sharing.

For more inspiration the HunterTools is my absolute favorite site, unfortunately it isn't maintained anymore (updated) but I still use the heat map and equipment mapping tools. (some day I'll have time to develop heatmapping on my own.)

Their weapon/animal selection might give you some more ideas.

Thanks, Djehmli!

Wow, I wish I had known about their website before they stopped updating it - that's super cool. Now I'm tempted to make a desktop application of the same concept...maybe have user-created Excel sheets imported to display heat-map results Lol.

I really like their weapon selection, which is basically what I'm aiming for, albeit in a more compact and UI-friendly display. Thank you for sharing!

This is a neat tool, thanks for sharing. Have you considered going for a web-based alternative though? The only reason I ask, is that people will be far more comfortable going to a website to use a tool, than they will be to install a third party application or download and run an executable. Plus, a website can be easily accessed from a smartphone mid-hunt without the need to alt-tab out of the game.

In an ideal world all of this info would be available in the client, but in lieu of that, third party tools are great. It's just about finding the most convenient option, and if possible one that doesn't require the user to install anything.

Just my two cents. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

I would like to have an option for Doc.
Can I shoot it? Yes, regardless which weapon.

regarding desktop display for heatmapping ... I'd jump on that in a heartbeat. and I already have spreadsheets of location kill data, as I figured I'd gather it for that 'some day'.

WOW! I didn't even know this website existed! It's awesome!
I wonder if it would be possible to design some kind of plug-in/add-on that automatically makes a heat map some day :0 Maybe a community shared one!

Also is the program link on here? Thehunter update points to this thread but I don't see any kind of download link! :D
