I make movies with Fraps and edit them mostly with Windows Media Movie Maker which compresses the files to about 5% or their original size without quality loss.

Once you import a video there's a "split" tool on the Edit tab.

To split, move the black bar to that position, then right click it. There will be an option to split. You can then right click the part you want to delete, there will also be an option in the context menu to delete.

Use OBS Studio and Hitfilm Express (both free) and you'll thank me in the long run. Fraps and Windows Media Movie Maker are limited in comparison. OBS Studio is way easier on the frame rates (since most of the processing is done by the GPU and not the CPU, just like ShadowPlay) and Hitfilm Express is not just a video editor, but also a composer (like After Effects).

I used windows movie maker a little when I first started. It's a great piece of free software. However, it is limited in its capabilities. I found that the output quality of my videos were highly compressed from the original. Also, after uploading to YouTube they were compressed even more. When I spend 10-12 hours making a video I want the best possible video quality. After a little research and experimentation I chose to use Adobe Premier Pro as my software. Granted it costs me about $30/month to use but I find it is definitely worth it. I record my videos using Shadowplay at the highest possible bitrate in the custom settings. With windows movie maker, after I was done encoding the video my bit rate was about 1/4 of the original video quality. It has a little bit steeper of a learning curve and I'm still just scratching the surface of its capabilities. I too am just learning and experimenting with all the options. Give it some thought. But yeah, Windows Movie Maker is a good starting point. That's just my opinion. If you're looking to live stream check out OBS Studio.

Hitfilm Express looks great, thanks for the tip. I also use Adobe Premiere Elements which is similar, the thing with Windows Movie Maker however is that I am a lot quicker, and it is very simple to use for beginners. Plus I have some templates which I was too lazy to transfer so far. I don't have the problem with lost video quality though.
