I watched a programme on TV about training dogs to not be afraid of rockets on new years and such and the trainer was telling the dog owners that if a dog got scared and you went to comfort it and pet it then you were teaching it that it was OK to be afraid of the noise and that it was something to fear.

The right response when the dog was afraid of the blasts from the rockets was to turn your back at it and ignore it.

I'm no dog trainer so I can't vouch for that being the correct way to do things. Just an observation considering your comment about the german shepherd.

im far to soft with my dog, well mams dog now that i m not at home. if a swan went for him id either be in the paper for possibly the most un dignified death at the hands of a "fancy duck" or id be behind bars for killing one of the queens royal birds

I'd be more worried about getting bird crap all over my jacket.
Evidently Russian birds aren't quite as skittish as ours.

It's not only in Russia, they sometimes just go aggressive. I believe it's a known behaviour for a wooden grouse/tetrao urogallus, but hasn't been "officialy" explained yet.

We thank you, Lord, for this land,
We thank you for the sights from our stands.
We pray for safety one and all,
We pray we may return next fall.

Because that's kind of a unique experience. I've had deer come up and touch the end of my arrow before that I didn't shoot just because I enjoyed having that experience. Hunting isn't all about the kill, it's about the experiences that you get to afield such as this one that make it memorable.
