Nowadays a 28" barrel is preferred and chambered for 3 1/2" mags for more steel shot and power..
the days of lead shot are gone and what these longer barrels used before.
And a note on it is that the 3 1/2" chambers can shoot the 2 3/4" & 3" shells also, so you are ready for any situation.

My guess is NO.
Most external hammer SXS shotguns were made to shoot Blackpowder paper shells, in the late 1800's thru very early 1900's.
And the 1st hammerless SXS shotguns were made in the early 1900's also that shot smokeless (modern) powder paper shells.
The shell lengths came in 2 9/16" & 2 5/8".
I've owned a few of both.
